T-shirts...make them your own

So im a big fan of a white t shirt as any of my friends will tell you. You know, handsome, classic etc etc.  Basically they are easy.  Anyway, i always worry (as i am sure you do) that it looks like your always wearing the same one.  So i wanted to personalize them a little, and in a more interesting way than a monogram. So here we go...

Start sketching what it is you like and want to put on the t-shirt.  I mean who doesn't want a half drawn lion/gargoyle on a shirt?  Here are some artful shots of my sketches..blah blah...

oh a dear, and antlers, so out of character for me....

ohhh more antlers, so original, the letter b, again really pushing the boundaries.  Anyway you get the idea.....

Here is a nice shot of the paper that i like to sketch on, totally unnecessary but a pretty logo.  I like to sketch on velum that way you can always put different elements underneath the paper and trace through.  That is how i drew the header for this blog, lots of different elements sketched up then placed together and redrawn.  I also like to then scan them and piece them together, this way you can keep using the elements in different ways.  Just like clip art (!) I do have this wild dream of drawing my own wallpaper so one day all the elements would be used for that.

Now something a little more intereting.  You take the sketches and remembering to reverse them and photocopy or print onto this iron on paper.  Then you cut them out, the trick is to do it nice and tight to the image as you don't really want any white paper showing over the edge of your drawing as this will make a mark around it.  This only really matters on other color shirts like grey, you get an almost shadow.  Its not a big deal....

Now this is a heat press.  Totally unneccessary but great if you happen to have one (nobody happens to have one, you will know if you have one) but you will have an iron.  You simply iron it on for the correct amout of time. Its not a science so you can't really mess it up, then you peel it off and bobs your uncle, its done!.

terrible photo, and this didn't really come out, so i did in fact mess it up but more on that later....i didnt let the heat press heat up enough. Impatient me..never...

here we go, this looks good..

close up, whats nice is that the line art really shows up so you can get some good details in there, much better than screen prints.

love me an antler with an initial....

so this is the one that sort of came out, so i am going to experiment with hand drawing it in with a sharpie, should give a bit more texture. The bleeding is from a different pen that i tried out, and thankfully washed first.  I kinda like it but not all over.  The B is in the sharpie.  Stay tuned...
